Peter Norman was an Australian Olympian who placed second in the 200 meter race. He ran a time of 20.2 seconds which was his fastest time ever for the 200 meter in his career. He aimed to break the world record in this Olympics.
Even though Peter Norman was not raising his fist in the air or wearing black gloves he supported the protest and wore an equality badge on his jacket. He even came up with the idea for Carlos and Smith to wear a black glove in the salute. During the anthem he looked up at Tommie Smith and said "I stand with you". Unfortunately, when Norman returned to Australia after the Olympics he was shunned because he joined the salute. But he still stood by his action until his death in October of 2006 which he died from a heart attack. Both Carlos and Smith were pallbearers at his funeral.
